1.5-million-year-old human footprints found in Kenya

Earliest ‘human footprints’ found

The earliest footprints showing evidence of modern human foot anatomy and gait have been unearthed in Kenya.

The 1.5-million-year-old footprints display signs of a pronounced arch and short, aligned toes, in contrast to older footprints.

The size and spacing of the Kenyan markings – attributed to Homo erectus – reflect the height, weight, and walking style of modern humans.

The findings have been published in the journal Science.

The footprints are not the oldest belonging to a member of the human lineage. That title belongs to the 3.7 million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis prints found in Laetoli, Tanzania, in 1978.

Those prints, however, showed comparatively flat feet and a significantly higher angle between the big toe and the other toes, representative of a foot still adapted to grasping.

Exactly how that more ape-like foot developed into its modern version has remained unclear.

The fossil record is distinctly lacking in foot and hand bones, according to lead author Matthew Bennett of Bournemouth University, UK.

“The reason is that carnivores like to eat hands and feet,” Professor Bennett told BBC News.

“Once the flesh is gone there’s a lot of little bones that don’t get preserved, so we know very little about the evolution of hands and feet on our ancestors.”

Ileret dig site (M. Bennett)

The footprints were found near Ileret in northern Kenya. The site, on a small hill, is made up of metres of sediment which the researchers carefully cleared away.

What they found was two sets of footprints, one five metres deeper than the other, separated by sand, silt, and volcanic ash.

The team dated the surrounding sediment by comparing it with well-known radioisotope-dated samples from the region, finding that the two layers of prints were made at least 10,000 years apart.

Another critical feature that the series of footprints makes clear is how Homo erectus walked.

Map showing location of the footprints' site (Image: BBC)

There is evidence of a heavy landing on the heel with weight transferred along the outer edge of the foot, progressing to the ball of the foot and lifting off with the toes.

“That’s very diagnostic of the modern style of walking, and the Laetoli prints don’t give that same character,” Professor Bennett said.

The finding is a critical clue for mapping out the evolution of modern humans, both in terms of physiology and also how H. erectus fared in its environment.

H. erectus was a great leap in evolution, showing increased variety of diet and of habitat, and was the first Homo species to make the journey out of Africa.

“There’s some suggestion out there that Homo erectus was able to scour the landscape for carcasses and meat…and was able to get there very quickly, had longer limbs and was much more efficient in terms of long distance travel,” Professor Bennett added.

“Now we’re also saying it had an essentially modern foot anatomy and function, which also adds to that story.”

Bailout Bank Blows Millions Partying in L.A.

Bailout Bank Blows Millions Partying in L.A.

A bank that received $1.6 billion in bailout money just spent a fortune last week in L.A. hosting a series of lavish parties and concerts with famous singers … and TMZ cameras caught it all.

Northern Trust, a Chicago-based bank, sponsored the Northern Trust Open at the Riviera Country Club in L.A. We’re told Northern Trust paid millions to sponsor the PGA event which ended Sunday, but what happened off the golf course is even more shocking.

Northern Trust flew hundreds of clients and employees to L.A. and put many of them up at some of the fanciest and priciest hotels in the city. We’re told more than a hundred people were put up at the Beverly Wilshire in Bev Hills, and another hundred stayed at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel. Still more stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Marina Del Rey and others at Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica.

Here are the highlights:

Play videoPlay video

- Wednesday, Northern Trust hosted a fancy dinner at the Ritz followed by a performance by the group Chicago.

- Thursday, Northern Trust rented a private hangar at the Santa Monica Airport for dinner, followed by a performance by Earth, Wind & Fire.

- Saturday, Northern Trust had the entire House of Blues in West Hollywood shut down for its private party. We got the menu — guests dined on seared salmon and petite Angus filet. Dinner was followed by a performance by none other than Sheryl Crow.

There was also a fabulous cocktail party at the Loews. And how’s this for a nice touch: Female guests at the Chicago concert all got trinkets from … TIFFANY AND CO.

Sponsored Links: Naples Lawn Pest Control | Naples Lawn Service | Naples Curtains

As for what all that costs: Well, the company isn’t talking. We spoke with a rep from the band Chicago who said Northern Trust paid them around $100,000. A House of Blues source told us it cost more than $50,000 to close the joint down last Saturday night. As for Sheryl Crow’s fee, her rep didn’t get back to us. Earth, Wind & Fire acknowledges payment but won’t say how much.

As for the golf tournament, a rep from the PGA told us Northern Trust wrote one big fat check in order to sponsor the event. That check covers part of the $6.3 million purse, the advertising costs for the spots on CBS (which broadcast the final two rounds of the tournament) and operating costs. The rep says the fee was negotiated and is confidential.

Lots of people from Northern Trust went to the golf tourney … in special Mercedes that shuttled them to and from the hotels. But for those who weren’t into golfing, they could spend a few hours at the Northern Trust seminar on the credit crunch.

Now how’s this for outrage? Northern Trust laid off 450 workers in December, 4% of its workforce.

And here’s what’s absolutely amazing: The United States Government flat out gave Northern Trust the $1.6 billion in bailout money, and the bank didn’t even request it!

Northern Trust gave us a statement yesterday before going total radio silence. A rep for the bank acknowledges they paid for the events, but that the bailout money did not pay for the events. He claims it was paid out of the bank’s operating expenses. Here’s Northern Trust’s full statement to us.

Perhaps we’re missing something, but money is money. How can they spend like this when they’re using taxpayer’s money, whether they asked for it or not? And where the hell is Congress in all of this? Is there any oversight or accountability?

Your tax dollars, hard at work. Thomas Jefferson was right — “A little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing.”

Venomous mammal caught on camera

Posted in News on February 24th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Rare footage of one of the world’s most strange and elusive mammals has been captured by scientists.

Large, and with a long, thin snout, the Hispaniolan solenodon resembles an overgrown shrew; it can inject passing prey with a venom-loaded bite.

Little is known about the creature, which is found in the Caribbean, but it is under threat from deforestation, hunting and introduced species.

Researchers say conservation efforts are now needed.

The mammal was filmed in the summer of 2008 during a month-long expedition to the Dominican Republic – one of only two countries where this nocturnal, insect-eating animal (Solenodon paradoxus) can be found (the other is Haiti).

It is an amazing creature – it is one of the most evolutionary distinct mammals in the world
Dr Sam Turvey, ZSL

The researchers from the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Ornithological Society of Hispaniola were able to take measurements and DNA from the creature before it was released.

Dr Richard Young, from Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: “My colleagues were excited and thrilled when they found it in the trap.

“But despite a month’s worth of trapping effort, they only ever caught a single individual.”

Specialised teeth

The Hispaniolan solenodon is one of the creatures highlighted by the Zoological Society of London’s (ZSL) Edge of Existence programme, which focuses its efforts on conservation plans for animals that are both endangered and evolutionarily distinctive.

Hispaniolan solenodon (Gregory Guida)

Dr Sam Turvey, a ZSL researcher involved with the programme, told BBC News: “It is an amazing creature – it is one of the most evolutionary distinct mammals in the world.

“Along with the other species of solenodon, which is found in Cuba (Solenodon cubanus), it is the only living mammal that can actually inject venom into their prey through specialised teeth.

“The fossil record shows that some other now-extinct mammal groups also had so-called dental venom delivery systems. So this might have been a more general ancient mammalian characteristic that has been lost in most modern mammals, and is only retained in a couple of very ancient lineages.”

Solenodon habitat in Haiti (Sam Turvey)

A population was discovered living in a remote corner of Haiti

Dr Turvey and other scientists working for the Edge programme recently discovered a population of solenodons living in a remote corner of Haiti.

The researcher said that the team was surprised to find them; previously it had been feared that the creatures had become extinct in this country because of extensive deforestation, recently introduced mongoose and dogs, and hunting by humans for food.

He said: “They are still incredibly vulnerable and fragile. So it is really important to get back out there to work how how these animals are surviving.”

Hispaniolan solenodon (Gregory Guida)

Conservation efforts are now needed in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the teams believe, but the first step would be to find out more about the animal.

Dr Young said: “We know little about its ecology, its behaviour, its population status, its genetics – and without that knowledge base it is really difficult to design effective conservation.”

The research will be undertaken by ZSL’s Edge programme, Durrell, the Ornithological Society of Hispaniola, the Audubon Society of Haiti, and the Dominican Republic’s National Zoological Park and Agency for Protected Areas and Biodiversity.

Oldest dog Chanel: World's oldest dog needs jumper and goggles

The blonde wire-haired daschund, is 20 years old, or 102 in dog years.

Denice Shaughnessy, a retired Army veteran who now works as a school secretary adopted Chanel in 1988.

“She takes things very easy these days,” said Denice, who lives in Port Jefferson Station, New York.

“While I go to work she sleeps all day until I come home and then when I get home she is like a ball of fire.

“She walks about the house looking in every closet until about 10 o’clock. But she has very senior moments like any old person.

“Sometimes I will find her walking around at night and I have to give her a little snack and then she goes back to bed.”

Despite her good health, Chanel has cataract problems which means she has to wear special goggles whenever she leaves the house.

“She has to wear the goggles because she has cataracts and is very sensitive to the light,” says Denice who cares for Chanel with her husband Karl, a 44-year-old policeman.

“Chanel also has to wear a sweater because the older that she gets you notice the temperature change more and during the summer time she wears a T-shirt.

“Right now she eats a special diet dog food. I boil her chicken every day and then I cut it up and put it on her dog food but she has been eating table food her whole life.”

Chanel replaced Labrador cross, Bella, as the world’s oldest dog, who died at her Lincolnshire home in September last year.

Chanel’s current veterinarian, Dr. Philip Zangara from the Roosevelt Animal Hospital in Port Jefferson Station says: “She is an old dog and an incredible dog. It’s amazing she can still walk.”

Giant rat caught in China

The rat, which weighed six pounds and had a 12-inch tail, was caught at the weekend in a residential area of Fuzhou, a city of six million people on China’s south coast.

The ratcatcher, who was only named as Mr Xian, said he swooped for the rodent after seeing a big crowd of people surrounding it on the street.

He told local Chinese newspapers that he thought the rat might be a valuable specimen, or a rare species, and had to muster up his courage before grabbing its tail and picking it up by the scruff of its neck.

“I did it, I caught a rat the size of a cat!” he shouted out afterwards, according to the reports. Mr Xian is believed to still be in possession of the animal, after stuffing into a bag and departing the scene.

The local forestry unit in the city identified the nightmarish creature as a bamboo rat from initial photographs, but said that it would need to examine the rat more closely before making a final identification.

Chinese bamboo rats rarely grow beyond ten inches and are found throughout southern China, northern Burma and Vietnam.

However, the Sumatra bamboo rat, usually found in the south-western Chinese province of Yunnan and in the Malay Peninsula can grow up to 30 inches long, including tail, and can weigh up to eight pounds.

A “Giant Rat of Sumatra” is mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes tale: The Adventure of a Sussex Vampire.

All bamboo rats are slow-moving and usually spend their time in underground burrows, feeding on bamboo. Chinese bamboo rats are often sold for meat in Chinese markets. The largest rats in the world are thought to be African giant pouched rats, which can grow up to 36 inches in length.

GM, Chrysler ask for $21.6 billion more

GM, Chrysler ask for $21.6 billion more

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — General Motors and Chrysler LLC said Tuesday they could need an additional $21.6 billion in federal loans between them because of worsening demand for their cars and trucks.

The two firms, in documents submitted to the Treasury Department, also detailed plans to cut 50,000 jobs worldwide by the end of the year. GM said it plans to close five more plants in the next few years and confirmed it will drop some of its weaker brands.

When all is said and done,GM (GM, Fortune 500) said that by 2011 it could need a total of $30 billion, which includes the $13.4 billion in Treasury loans it has already received. In the near term, GM will most certainly need $9.1 billion in additional loans and could require another $7.5 billion in the next two years if auto sales don’t improve.

Chrysler said it now needs a total of $9 billion, up from the $4 billion Treasury loan it received in December. Chrysler said it will need that money by March 31.

GM also accelerated its job cut plans, saying that it would eliminate 47,000 jobs over the course of 2009. The company said it would cut about 20,000 jobs in the United States, or about 22% of its remaining U.S. staff.

Previously, GM called for U.S. job cuts of between 20,000 to 30,000 workers, but it had stretched out those reductions through 2012.

The company said it plans to close five additional U.S. plants by 2012 –in addition to the 12 planned closings announced in December. Executives would not identify the plants that would be closed.

“Our plan is significantly more aggressive because it has to be,” said GM Chairman Rick Wagoner.

Experts said that the request for additional dollars are not a surprise, given how bad auto sales have been since the December plea for help.

“The most important issue is not what the automakers are going to do to cut costs, but rather what the government is going to do to stimulate car sales,” stated Jeremy Anwyl, CEO of car sales tracker Edmunds.com. “No automaker is viable under the current market conditions, and so far the spending package appears to spread money too thin to actually make much of a difference in any one area.”

Some economists argued that the problems detailed in the plans show that GM and Chrysler are already failed companies.

“When consumers refuse to buy your product, that’s the economy telling you you’re bankrupt,” said Rich Yamarone, director of research at Argus Research. ”

But Yamarone said it may make sense to give them the money they need, even if it’s good money after bad, because the battered U.S. economy can’t weather the halt of operations at GM and Chrysler right now.

GM added it plans to phase out the Saturn brand by the middle of 2011 if it is unable to sell or spin-off the brand. GM is also looking to sell its Saab brand, and will look for help from the Swedish government to support Saab until a buyer is found.

Chrysler said it plans to cut about 3,000 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, and reduce capacity by another 100,000 vehicles this year as it tries to adjust to reduced demand. It also said it has won the concessions from the United Auto Workers union and its creditors that were demanded under terms of the loan from the Treasury Department.

The companies had a deadline of Tuesday to update the government on the status of their turnaround plans. The new plans highlighted a worsening forecast for sales, and more job cuts at the companies in the coming months.

Bankruptcy could be ‘cataclysmic’

A newly-appointed auto panel will review both plans and determine by March 31 if GM and Chrysler can be viable in the long run. Specifically, the Treasury Department is looking for details about the progress of negotiations with creditors and the UAW.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs issued a statement late Tuesday saying that the panel would be reviewing the plans and that “We appreciate the effort that these companies and their stakeholders have made.”

The automakers’ request for a $34 billion federal bailout in December fell short when Senate Republicans blocked passage of the request. The Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress have grown since then.

While both plans are more than 100 pages each, they have only limited details about the latest deals reached with the United Auto Workers union to shed costs, as well as about GM’s efforts to shed much of its unsecured debt, as required under the terms of its existing loans.

GM is struggling under a $35 billion mountain of unsecured debt. It hopes to shed about two-thirds of that debt with a swap of debt for equity with its bond holders.

But the company was not able to reach a deal with the bond holders by Tuesday’s deadline, although it did include a letter from their committee’s financial and legal advisers saying that they are “prepared to recommend that the committee approve and support the bond exchange” proposed by GM.

If the federal panel looking at the plans rules either company is not viable, it could recall the outstanding loans, a move that would likely force them into bankruptcy. In a statement, Chrysler chairman Robert Nardelli said he believes additional federal help is the best course for both Chrysler and the battered U.S. economy.

“We believe the requested working capital loan is the least-costly alternative and will help provide an important stimulus to the U.S. economy and deliver positive results for American taxpayers,” said Nardelli in the statement.

To that end, the companies also submitted an analysis of what would happen if it filed for bankruptcy. In a reorganization scenario, GM said it might need up to $100 billion in additional federal loans to finance their operations during a two-year reorganization. Chrysler said it would need up to $20 billion to $25 billion.

If it was forced to liquidate, Chrysler estimated there would be a loss of 2 million to 3 million jobs, resulting in a $150 billion reduction in federal tax revenue over three years.

Nardelli added that a Chrysler bankruptcy would have a “cataclysmic” impact on the auto parts supplier industry, which would affect operations and production at all automakers.

Sales forecast: From bad to worse

The other member of Detroit’s so-called Big Three, Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500), requested a credit line of $9 billion from Congress in December.

But Ford said it would not to have to tap the line of credit unless conditions in the auto market and economy deteriorated more than expected.

Since then, demand for cars and trucks has gone from bad to worse, with January sales falling to their lowest level in 26 years. The automakers and industry experts have also slashed sales forecasts for 2009 and beyond.

Chrysler has been among the hardest hit in the industry though. Sales plunged 54% from year-earlier levels in December and January, and the company left most of its 12 North American assembly plants idled throughout January due to weak demand and excess inventory.

In addition to the job and production cuts, the company pledged to further lower costs by eliminating a manufacturing shift and discontinuing three models.

“We fully understand the need to adapt to significantly reduced annual U.S. sales,” said Nardelli in Chrysler’s statement.

The company now expects industrywide U.S. sales this year of only 10.1 million vehicles, which would be a 40-year low. It believes sales from 2010 through 2012 will average only 10.8 million a year.

GM’s U.S. sales forecast for 2009 is close to Chrysler’s estimate – around 10.5 million cars and light trucks. But it is far more optimistic about a rebound in sales from 2010-2012.

Separately, UAW president Ron Gettelfinger said in a statement Tuesday that the union had “reached tentative understandings with Chrysler, Ford and General Motors on modifications to the 2007 national agreements.”

Gettelfinger said “the changes will help these companies face the extraordinarily difficult economic climate in which they operate.” But he declined to disclose specific terms of the tentative agreement and said that discussions were continuing.

Ever get the feeling Congress is up to something that would outrage the public if they really knew what was going on? Nancy Pelosi is refusing to allow members of congress to see the language of the bill. But guess what? Lobbyists DO have access to it. That’s right, congress isn’t allowed to see but lobbyists are, and no I’m not making it up. How’s that for some hope and change you suckers?

—————————————-
Congress is pushing the stimulus through way too quickly.

With TARP we had a similar amount of urgency to pass a bailout for the banks and it turns out that the banks irresponsibly used the money to pay themselves bonuses for running their companies into the ground.

See what happens when government messes with the free markets? These companies were rewarded for their bad behavior.

As shameful as this activity was the government should have anticipated that Wall Street and the law of greed would need a check on it to make sure the bailout money was being spent in a worthwhile manner.

See what happens when we make decisions too quickly?

$789 billion is a lot of money to spend without much forethought and planning.

The goal of “creating or saving 3.5 million jobs” is worthy one, but exactly how is this going to be done?

Congress and President Obama have not satisfactorily explained how this bill is going to save and create jobs. Instead we are faced with inflammatory rhetoric saying that if we do not act now, we will be facing a catastrophe.

The whole idea behind our government is that drastic plans of actions need to be carefully scrutinized and not undertaken in a fear driven frenzy.

Eight arrested in Michael Phelps case

Boy oh boy, they don’t know what to waste money on next do they? I wonder if this cesspool of a town is going to re-elect this pig cop Lott after this embarrassment. Never mind the fact that the majority of Americans don’t think marijuana should be illegal, don’t they have more important things to worry about? This pig is doing nothing but seeking attention. I hope the towns people give him attention in the form of kicking his worthless ass out of office. Why doesn’t the piece of trash government worker go win 6 gold medals? Oh thats right, because he is a worthless government worker that has no skills what so ever.

Eight arrested in Michael Phelps case

Sponsored By: Naples Locksmith

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – New details have emerged about a party where Olympic champion Michael Phelps was spotted.

On Feb. 2, a British tabloid published a picture of the 14-time Olympic gold medalist using a water pipe to smoke marijuana. The picture was taken at a party in Columbia back in November when Phelps was here for a visit.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has been taking a lot of heat from people in this country and all over the world.

They want to know why Sheriff Leon Lott is going after Michael Phelps.

Many are saying the sheriff should concentrate on more serious crimes, or at the very least, not focus solely on the Olympic champion when there were others at the party who were also breaking the law.

Now it appears the case has expanded beyond Phelps’ activities.

The party took place in November at a house on Blossom Street near Five Points.

It was at that house where someone snapped the photo of Phelps taking a hit on a marijuana pipe called a bong.

Lott says the picture indicated a law was being broken in his jurisdiction. He said he couldn’t ignore the violation just because Phelps is rich and famous.

We’ve now learned that since investigators began trying to build a case, they’ve made eight arrests: seven for drug possession and one for distribution. These are arrests that resulted as the sheriff’s department served search warrants.

We’ve also learned that the department has located and confiscated that bong.

Sources say the owner of the bong was trying to sell it on eBay for as much as $100,000.

The owner, who wasn’t even at the party, is one of the eight now charged.

Phelps is not one of those charged at this point, but the sheriff’s department has strong evidence that matches the photo to the house on Blossom Street.

That house is in the city, but the Columbia Police Department decided not to initiate or take an active role in the investigation.

Governor Mark Sanford is also weighing in on the sheriff’s actions.

On the FOX News Channel Sunday night, Geraldo Rivera asked Sanford whether Phelps should be prosecuted.

“I don’t see what it gets at this point,” said Sanford.

His spokesman told us Monday night Sanford is letting that quote stand.

Pressure Cleaning

Posted in Naples Stuff on February 10th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

The following blog post is form a page on the BBCC website. BBCC basically does an assortment of services from moving and junk removal to window and home cleaning. The below post was actually written by a content writter I found in sitepoint, I’m not sure that I will use them again because I wasn’t really too happy with the content. The text you see below is not the real thing, it’s what I have edited to make presentable. The stuff he sent me was really bad.

——————————————

Keeping your house clean on the inside is a tough task to tackle in and of itself, as is making sure the outside of your home is clean. Pressure cleaning a house can be long, tiresome, and difficult if done on your own. But if you hire the Big Blue Clean Up Crew, you won’t have to worry about anything. No job is too big or too small for our professional and experienced staff to handle.

We offer our current clients and prospective clients a free estimates for the jobs they need done. BBCC pressure cleaning includes maintaining residential properties with routine cleanings that usually amount to two cleanings per year. Some houses need more than that and some houses might need less than that.
The Big Blue Clean Up Crew services the areas of Naples, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Bonita and everywhere in between.

We recommend that you have pressure cleaning performed on your sidewalks, decks, driveways, gutters, roofs, cages, soffit and fascia. All of these areas outside of the home are affected each and every day by the weather and should be cleaned on a regular basis. We use a lift to clean our customers’ roofs and do not let our crew members walk on anyone’s roof, for any reason at all.

What does BBCC pressure cleaning accomplish? Pressure cleaning will help to remove grout, dirt, and those ugly black lines on the siding of your home. All of those things develop over time because of the rain, water, sun , and humidity of South Florida. When it rains and the winds pick up, dirt is strewn about and it lands on the siding of your home, creating a scum-like coating. The only way to get rid of this dirt coating is to pressure wash the outside of your home, it will not go away with a simple rainfall. Why? The reason is that the rainfall is not strong enough to do the job. Pressure washing machines pump water with cleaning chemicals onto the house with a strong pressure. This pressure helps to remove the dirt and clean the home.

If you are looking for a professional, experienced and dedicated crew to pressure wash your home, driveway, sidewalks and more, contact the Big Blue Clean Up Crew to schedule a consultation today. We offer our current and prospective clients free estimates for the work that you need done. We also offer our customers bundled services. If you need more than one thing done at once, ask us, and we will put together the perfect package for you. These bundled packages can help save you time and money.
